Surf Video

Since the early 1966 release of The Endless Summer, the world was exposed to a strange and wonderful new sport. In this film, two young surfers, Mike Hynson and Robert August, followed the summer season around the world in search of the perfect wave. They went to many countries that had never seen, much less heard of surfing and popularized it worldwide. Surf videos like these brought the sport to national attention.

Its 1994 sequel, The Endless Summer II, brought back some old friends and places while still visiting virgin territory. It garnered still more international attention and opened the door for more ambitious projects and ideas. These two surf videos did more to launch this style of documentary film making than any other.

2003’s Step Into Liquid, and 2004’s Riding Giants, picked up where The Endless Summer II left off by relating the history of big-wave riding from the days of longboards up to modern shortboard tow-in surfing. These surf videos alongside many others released in the new millennium continue to spread the sports influence across the globe. It seems that as technology makes the world smaller it also makes surfing’s influence more far-reaching.
