Surf Gear

Aside from long and short boards surf gear also includes skimboards, which are used to skim along the shallowest part of the surf in only a few inches of water. These boards catch the very highest part of the surf and can even venture out into depths of six feet as the surf recedes from the beach. It takes some measure of skill to thrust one of these boards into the surf and jump on it as gravity pulls you out into deeper water.

In times past, popular memory recalls the classic surf woodies with boards and surf gear pilled upon them seeking the beach. Later eras might remember the panel vans loaded in much the same way, but nowadays surf-shops carry a wide range of racks such that most any car can be outfitted to transport a few boards to the beach. It may be less iconic but it is surely more functional.

Surf gear also includes fins and face-masks which aid the dedicated surfer in finding and catching the perfect wave. The fins give more power to a surfer trying to get through the breaking waves and into deeper water where a wave is best caught. A mask and snorkel also help the surfer get through these waves which must be swam under in order to not lose too much ground. These devices have taken some of the exhaustive effort out of an already intensively physical sport.
