Surf DVD

Surf DVD’s first emerged in the late nineteen-fifties and soon became a huge force in reshaping and redefining youth culture. A plethora of films bloomed out of this period, many of which starred Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. These ‘bikini beach’ films shocked many parents and authority figures in their time, despite how innocent they may seem today.

This ‘beach party’ genre would persist into the early nineteen-eighties, always pushing the boundaries of propriety ever further as culture continued to change. 1984’s surf-film Hardbodies, tells the story of a recently homeless con-man who has a way with women. Three older divorcees who lack charm with ladies but have money to burn agree to put up the grifter, in exchange for teaching them how to pick up surfer-dudettes. This film marks the last of the beach party surf DVD’s.

Hardbodies closed the chapter on the popular sexy surf comedy but also paved the way for more serious action filmmaking in the surf genre. One such film, Point Break in 1991, was revolutionary in that it not only portrayed surfing in a more serious light, but also had plot elements that made it accessible to people other than beach party bums and surfing elite. It paved the way for many more movies that would portray not only surfing but also surfers in a more serious light. Surf DVD’s continue to be popular today.
