Surf Clothes

Everyone knows that surf clothes are typified by a casual style and comfort. And while surf clothes have become both mainstream and fashionable, there is more to them than comfort and trendiness. Just as the Polynesian natives surfed naked and lived peacefully, at least in their own communities, modern surf clothes speak volumes about their wearer’s lifestyle.

Wearing this style sends the message that this person is cool and laid-back. It suggests a desire to be peaceful and calm in human interactions. But don’t mistake these dudes for wimps, for they daily wage epic battles in the surfs near their homes. These wars are not fought for domination or riches, but for oneness with one of earth’s great forces. This clothing style seems to say: Why fight your fellow man when there is a much finer adversary so close by?

One of the most iconic portrayals of surf clothes style and attitude is Sean Penn’s character, Jeff Spicoli, in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, in 1982. This surfer dude’s style and attitude clearly represent what it means to be a surfer. It’s not just clothing, lingo, and extra-circular activities that create a surfer but a lifestyle in the most absolute sense.
